You have no chance. Make Your time All Your XP belong to us

According to this article Soon no one will be able to get Security updates unless you upgrade to Windows XP. Some of it is due to Microsoft's choice to simply not allow certain builds of Windows (*Cough* 2000 *coughcough*) to update but windows98 Original and earlier are simply unpatchable with the new system. Ah man :'( Time to put up my Windows 3.01 Computer :( And It had never caught a virus either :-D

Just another example of Micrsoft using their 'powers' to mistreat their hapless 'subjects'...

Well i have an old PC: 32MB RAM - 4GB HDD
and I know there's no way it can run that futuristic dinosaur called XP...

its a good thing I have already begun to look at linux... someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure that linux will readily run on my old system, which Microsoft is trying to force me to discard...
Asi es la vida

Readily is a tentative word. It will run but you may not be able to run THE most modern version. Linux can be very heavy if you run a lot of things on it. The good part is you can customize it to however you like and the updates are free forevermore. So while at some point in time you may want to maybe buy another 32 MBs of RAM (Along with a new Computer ;)) that old computer can always be useful to you.

Yes when they stop giving out updates to all XPs. Microsoft can't afford to stop updating pirated versions so they will keep on doing it.

Microsoft is wrapping up the last big update to Windows XP before they move wholesale (retail?) to Windows Vista and Windows 7. The initial reviews seem very favourable with some nice gains in speed and footprint.

Regarding the aspect of the article I'm not sure I can take seriously a post who's only source is (non-linked) the Naked News. Moreso when there is a phenomena of over 50% of a country as well noted in the technological world as Japan making use of some "the new technology that will replace" Windows yet no name is given and apparently only one company is moving on this information. So if someone is actually waiting for that to happen I sure hope that you stocked up on a lot of Books and canned products cause it might be a while.

Regarding Linux. I think that they are going to have a very rough time halting Linux but that LInux will not anytime in the foreseeable future "beat" Windows It will break the monopoly since for quite a few people it's good enough for daily use and for a whole lot more it's quite a good deal superior to Windows. There are also a number of people for whom Windows is superior and some of those for whom Linux will never be a viable option. For the foreseeable future I think that Microsoft's biggest issue will be that people use OSX and Linux to force Microsoft to build better software and platforms. Which means that they will then be competing against themselves but making life hard for themselves. Windows XP was a PR disaster for viruses and breaking down but most people don't want to leave it. Windows Vista was a problem since they had to break a lot of things to make it work nearly as well as OSX or Linux. Windows 7 will be another case where it will be very hard to move people off of it. (By the way take a note of how Bad Windows 7 will be in 4 years The ads from Microsoft will trash it) Most likely Microsoft will start having much shorter time periods to stop doing updates as this thread pointed out.

Will the two magic things on that list destroy Windows? No not likely. Will it break the Monopoly pretty sure at least one of them will.
