Virus that's locking up my optical disc drive

Postby winliz » Mon May 11, 2009 2:32 pm

I think I have a virus that's locking up my optical disc drive. I did not know this was even possible. I thought that this was a mechanical problem, but I don't think it is.

If I try to open my optical disc drive, the CD that was left in it AutoRuns. The drive will not open at all. We tried an external optical disc drive, it worked once. On the next attempt to use the external drive it start to behave like the original internal one.

I think it is a virus. I would like to re-install the OS to get rid of the virus. how do you get rid of a virus that locks up your optical disc drive.

The mechanical open paper clip trick works right? Would depend on if it's attacking the Driver or the HAL stack. Generally a scorched earth works :)

I have not tried to force open the drive for fear of damaging it. But I suppose I could try a thing. What's a scorched earth?

Sorry for the long time before an answer. Scorched Earth is the tactic used in Veitnam where becuase of hte Jungle you couldn't pick out friend for or distraction properly so they pulledo ut the friends and naplamed the jungle to burn everything down to the ground then it was easy and you just had to rebuild the villages and farmland and jungle when you were done.

For IT that means backup thngs you need make sure they are good and wipe the machine. Which tends to tbe the usual solution to a windows problem. I'm assuming this isn't a Work machine since they would have taken it in hand to fix it already. If you'd like a less drastic solution I'd say reinstall your ASPI Layer in Windows. This is what is used by CD software to burn CDs and to put a lock on the drive. Even if it's not a virus then this is the likely method being used to lock multiple drives.

Is it the same CD that you used in both circumstances?

No, it was not the same CD used in both circumstances. I will need to research, re-installing the ASPI layer in windows?
